Specifying a Fire Fighting Water Pump

A fire fighting water pump is a critical piece of fire safety equipment in many buildings. The pump is responsible for the overall pressure of the fire sprinkler system in the building and ensuring that there are enough water and pressure to fight a major fire. As such, there are a number of important things to consider when designing a fire pump and system to ensure that it is safe, reliable and code-compliant.

The first thing to consider when specifying a fire fighting water pump is the required PSI and GPM for the structure. PSI stands for pressure per square inch, and GPM is the amount of water that the pump can move in a given period of time. These two factors are used together to determine the proper size of fire pump for the structure.

When designing a fire pump, you also need to consider the building’s construction and layout. For example, you need to understand the building’s height, how many floors it has and what the occupant classification is. This information can help you determine the best location for the fire tank, as well as if it needs to be above or below ground level.

Lastly, you must also be aware of any local or global regulations and standards that may apply to your fire protection system. For instance, some insurers and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) require that the maximum pressure point of the pump is not higher than 250 psi.
