How to Use AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery With Arpio

AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery (DR) is a fully managed, cost-effective, and scalable disaster recovery solution for your physical, virtual, and cloud workloads. It enables you to minimize data loss and recovery time objectives (RPOs and RTOs) by continuously replicating your data, systems, applications, and databases into an AWS Region. This allows you to quickly recover from unplanned events such as hardware or software failures, infrastructure outages, and ransomware attacks.

A DR plan is essential to keep your business running and customers happy in the event of an unexpected disruption. IT disasters such as server corruption and data center outages can significantly impact your revenue and reputation. If you’re not protected against these unexpected events, it could be disastrous for your business.

Using a “Pilot Light Strategy,” AWS Elastic DR replicates your operating systems, system state configuration, databases, and applications into a low-cost staging area in an AWS Region. This staging area is only deployed when a failover event is triggered, making it much more affordable than traditional DR solutions that require you to build and then restore data elements.

After a failover event, you can recover your operating systems, database servers, and applications from the AWS Region that was selected as your DR destination in the DRS dashboard. You can choose to recover your machines at a previous point in time or at the most recent version of your data. You can also perform non-disruptive test recoveries to verify your DR plan is working properly.

With Arpio, you can drive AWS’s native capabilities to achieve zero data loss, allowing your workloads to recover from disasters in real time. If you’d prefer to balance cost with speed, you can configure Arpio to use lower-cost snapshotting capabilities to protect workloads that have a longer RPO. Arpio’s easy-to-use SaaS solution also streamlines your DR process, giving you a unified view of your RPO across all of your cloud workloads and a single solution to manage them.

When disaster strikes, your recovery instances are launched on AWS within minutes based on a chosen point in time. After your application is recovered, you can begin to initiate a failback replication from AWS to your on-premises environment.

Regular testing of your recovery systems is a critical part of your DR plan. AWS Elastic DR makes it easy to launch test instances in your recovery environment without redirecting production traffic. This makes it easy to regularly test and perform drills without disrupting your production environments.
